“Cool Thoughts”

What’s cool?

Some thought it was cool to ensure every person had the right to marriage regardless of who they choose,

because in the eternal search for love, no one would should have to lose,

who do ya love?

Others thought it was cool to smile in your face while steady plottin’ to delete you like typed words via backspace,

shout out to backstabbers.

They thought it was cool to raise parking and tuition all while trying to decrease your ambition,

*waves to Corporate universities*

They thought it was cool to tear down neighborhoods and build million-dollar condos all up and down the southside of Chicago,

gentrification.

They thought it was cool to deprive black people of education, implement segregation, ruin their reputaion and then take a vacation,

Jim Crow.

They thought it was cool to cut the African American studies classes to keep the truth from the masses,

KKK

They thought it was cool to pull you over if you were suspected to be hispanic just to enjoy the fear on ya face when you panic,

Arizona.

They thought it was cool to assume that he was cheating, they let their friends talk them to a truth that was decieving,

gossip girls.

They thought it was cool to open fire at that party to end the fight, but they didn’t know I’d lose a friend that night,

black on black crime. Stop the violence.

They thought it was cool to take the lives of thousands that seemingly normal September morning now we have another holiday dedicated to mourning,

Osama.

They thought it was cool to abuse a man’s face simply because of his race, or ending his life in one night simply because he wasn’t white and he thought his badge gave him the right,

Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell, Mike Brown and Rodney King.

Freeze,

cuz the problem is we think its cool too.

Some things in this life are truly beautiful without much effort, and some things are truly tragic without much effort.

The key is putting our effort toward the former not the latter.

Check your mentality, before you overdose on bein’ “cool”…

Sincerely,

Andrew Washington III
